There are different natural items one can use at home to
treat itchy skin. The causes of itch on the skin vary and at times may be
caused by other skin ailments such as eczema, dermatitis, scabies and insect
bites. In most cases however, itchy skin is caused by excess dryness of the
skin and other psychological factors such as stress and anxiety. There are many
home remedies for itchy skin depending on the cause of the itch. Some common
remedies are discussed below;
Apple cider vinegar
The apple cider vinegar is antibacterial, antifungal and
antiseptic and hence a good remedy for itchy skin. It is a good remedy for
stopping itching resulting from sun burns and dandruff. Due to its properties,
the vinegar can also destroy fungus and other micro-organisms on the skin that
are known to cause itching. To use the product, one simply soaks a cotton ball
into the vinegar then applies onto the affected areas.
Bentonite clay
Clay has been used for centuries to heal different skin
conditions and is perfect for many skin conditions including acne. It is mainly
used on itchy skin to heal venomous stings or bites from bugs such as bees and
wasps, spiders and other biting bugs. The clay works by drawing the venom out
of the skin, making the itch or pain subside and helping the sting heal faster.
To use the clay, mix a small amount with distilled water in a bowl and make a
very fine paste. Dab the paste on the affected skin and allow it to dry then
peel off or rinse with water.
Peppermint leaves
Peppermint leaves are good for treating itchy skin caused by
insect bites. The leaves provide a cooling sensation to the skin and provide
relief. You can simply crush the leaves in mortar and apply directly onto the
skin.
Aloe Vera
This plant is used for nearly all skin conditions. To use
the plant to treat itchy skin, get a fresh leaf of the plant and cut it
lengthwise with a knife then scoop the gel and apply onto the itchy skin. The
remaining gel can be kept in a container and can be refrigerated for about one
week.
Oatmeal
Oat meal has compounds that reduce inflammation and can be
used on itchy skin. It can be used to treat effects of poison ivy and eczema or
even chicken pox. To use the remedy, prepare about four tablespoons of oatmeal
by boiling till ready or soak the uncooked oatmeal in a bowl with some water
till it forms a paste then apply onto the itchy skin.
